One of the best parts of being an entrepreneur is the choice on who to do business with. This includes both clients and partners. A bit of background – Jennifer and I worked together for almost seven years for an organization. We had bosses, colleagues and partners we did business with and for. We learned a lot from all of these different relationships and when the time came for us to move out on our own we embraced the idea that the relationships we build now are for us.
Starting with ourselves. Our Forté works because we are doing this together.
Jennifer and I recognize we each have strengths the other doesn’t. We rely on each other to bring the best in ourselves forward and support each other when needed. And it is often needed. We are moms, wives, sisters, daughters and life can get overwhelming. I know I am so grateful to have Jennifer on my side in life and in this business.
Our clients – as a boutique event management firm we do have a capacity limit and we are ok with this. We get to choose who we work with. Clients who value what we have to offer, who trust us as the experts in our field, who are respectful to us and others and who allows us to use our creativity are the clients we have on our roster.
The pressure of having to make a relationship work that is disrespectful or uncomfortable for us because of a boss is no longer there. The relationships we have with our clients are based on trust and respect and we work so close with our clients and their teams that we feel we are part of the organization.
When clients need us to bring in other experts we have a roster of partners we turn to from décor, to auctions, to A/V, catering, venues, photographers, event branding, and creative design. We have worked hard at building connections with partners who can help us deliver better services for our clients, who are reliable and who we have fun working with!
Being an entrepreneur is hard work and we’ve come to rely on our relationships with other entrepreneurs and friends like Paras Metha, Jackie Fox and Linda Leja to be our sounding board, for mentoring, for coaching, for reminding us we are on the right track and for some fun. A one hour meeting with Linda will energize us for a month, a coffee with Jackie and we have a ton of new ideas and a dinner date with Paras will feed our souls and make us smile long after we’ve said goodbye. We are lucky to get to surround ourselves with people like these three and still call it business!
Here’s hoping you too can find happiness with those you work with.
