Q & A with Peter John Van Dyk

May 29, 2017

Meet Peter John Van Dyk, partner at PV&V Insurance, Burlington Chamber of Commerce Board Member and a hands-on, passionate philanthropist.

Q: How does PV&V Insurance select the charities it supports?

We try to support local charities first as a way of keeping our dollars in the communities where we do business. We give and volunteer based on the need and impact the charity will have as a result of our donation.

Q: Tell us about your involvement with the YWCA, Hamilton.

I have been involved in the YWCA since November 2015. I was challenged by a friend to get a group together to sponsor, cook and serve a meal to the women in the transitional living program. This program is called Be the Recipe for Change and I ended up doing 3 of these within a few months and loved being involved. A staff member asked me for some help in raising the balance of the funds needed to complete the kitchen cafe renovation. Through our business, we have access to several Insurance company foundations and grants. I approached these foundations and called on some community business people and we got the job done. The renovated kitchen has an operating cafe serving coffee, snacks, soup, sandwiches and even does event catering. We now have a social enterprise within the YWCA that employs people and earns money like any small business!

Q: What is it about the YWCA’s Be the Recipe for Change that is so special for you?

The special moment of volunteering with Be the Recipe for Change was seeing the kitchen renovations completed and the new cafe open in April 2017! The women who use the cafe when they eat together now have a space that does not feel institutional or cafeteria style. It's more of a cozy cafe restaurant. I have been fortunate to meet so many like minded and helpful people through this process. I have gained a better understanding of all the amazing programs and services that the YWCA offers in Hamilton. They are building dynamic leaders and strengthening women's voices in the community!

Q: How can others support the YWCA?
