What are you doing this summer?

When the cottage calls, a smart fundraiser listens. Summer is a great time to catch up and refocus your energy for the year. Here are 5 easy things you can do today to work smarter, not harder this summer.

1. Update your fundraising plan

It’s been hectic. With your donors on vacation, take the time to update your fundraising plan for the benefit of your team, your board and yourself. Better yet, take an offsite morning at the cottage so you can FOCUS on the plan!

2. Reward a team member for “above and beyond “commitment

July and August are two months when you probably don’t have tons of events scheduled. Seek out one team member and say thank you. Pick something specific that you liked about their work, and let them know that they’re an important part of the team. (No team members? No problem. Thank a volunteer over coffee). Consider giving someone an extra day off, just because you can. How powerful is that!

3. Clean up your database

It’s not sexy work, but gosh, is it important. If the idea of touching your database makes you want to gag, motivate yourself with something: break the task into bite-sized pieces. Assign each day of the week a group of letters. A-D is Monday, E-I is Tuesday and so on. This will help you get through your alphabet, while keeping your focus. Need some motivation? Assign one jelly bean per letter. You get to eat the jelly bean when you’re done with the letter. Yum!

4. Find your holiday appeal story

Plan for the fall appeal season by finding your next impact story today. Start by reaching out to your community – volunteers, staff and programming people – to find this year’s transformational story. Bonus points if you interview them before August 31st. Double bonus points if you get a first draft of your appeal letter done.

5. Take a vacation

Get out of the office to rewind and reflect. Everyone needs time away. Take yours this summer. For inspiration, grab a fundraising, marketing or business book to grow your skills from the beach. Get away from the office so you can work smarter, not harder, when you’re back.

Summer is a great time to shift focus and to refuel. If you’re looking to up level your game for the fall, consider working with a professional fundraising coach. Coaching has the single biggest ROI on fundraising success. Access the tools you need to bring your “A” game to work.
