Q: What is Action Against Hunger?
Action Against Hunger is an international humanitarian organization committed to fighting hunger and its root causes worldwide. For almost 40 years, across more than 50 countries, we have led the fight against hunger, saving the lives of children and their families. With experience working in conflict zones and natural disasters, as well as reacting to food crises, Action Against Hunger responds to emergencies but also works with communities to push for long-term change and search for effective solutions to ensure children grow up strong.
Q: Why is your work so important?
While malnutrition is deadly, it is treatable and there are solutions. We can save lives by diagnosing, treating and preventing deadly malnutrition. Plus, we tackle the root causes of hunger using sustainable, community-focused methods, as well as providing emergency response. Most importantly, reducing malnutrition is fundamental to sustained economic growth and development. Undernourished children struggle to learn and retain information, which means they under perform in school, which has a long-term impact in communities with high malnutrition rates.
Q: What services/programs do you provide?
Action Against Hunger carries out innovative, lifesaving programs in nutrition, food security, water, and sanitation, health, and advocacy. These programs reach millions of people annually in more than 50 countries, restoring dignity, self-sufficiency, and independence to vulnerable populations around the world.
In 2017, Action Against Hunger launched a new project in Canada, dubbed Generation Nutrition. We are growing fresh produce in container gardens at primary schools in underprivileged neighbourhoods across the country, as well as educating the next generation of Canadian youth about healthy eating, food waste, and agriculture. This is one of the ways we at Action Against Hunger have committed to responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Q: How can I support?
By donating to Action Against Hunger, you demonstrate your compassion for, and commitment to, our goal of eliminating malnutrition. This includes support for:
A SMART way to end hunger: By leading and championing a nutritional survey methodology called SMART, your gift helps us gain a better understanding of hunger in malnourished communities and identify the best ways to support them.
Education: Your support helps us Grow Generation Nutrition, a program that teaches a new generation of Canadian youth about healthy eating, food waste, and agriculture.
Maternal and child health: Your commitment to reducing hunger will help improve maternal, adolescent, and child nutrition through promotion of local feeding and care practices, nutritious foods, and supplements.
