What makes a "great" volunteer?

April 3, 2018

Volunteering is the act of someone freely offering to participate in an organization or undertake a task for no financial gain.

At Our Forté Events we work with volunteers on every event we produce and have learned that anyone can be a volunteer, but there are a few things that make a “great” volunteer. These are:

Willingness to Learn

Great volunteers don’t need to know everything, but what sets them apart is their desire and willingness to learn. They listen and learn about what is being asked of them, so they know why it is important and how they fit into the big picture of the event's goals.

Friendly & Enthusiastic

Great volunteers always have a positive attitude because they WANT to be there. They are not people who have been “voluntold” to do something. They smile, talk to people and engage with guests. They are there to help the organization raise money, thank donors and ensure a great time was had by everyone.

Great volunteers follow through on their commitments. If they sign up to volunteer, they show up at the proper time ready to learn and work hard. There is nothing more frustrating than assigning a volunteer to a specific role, training them ahead of time and them not showing up.

Great volunteers are willing to do what needs to be done and will help wherever needed. When a volunteer schedule is put together, strengths of each volunteer are not always known. The key is finding those volunteers who are flexible to move out of a role and into another, stay longer than needed or pitch in at the end of the night; because no matter how much you plan, things can change, and we need volunteers who can too!

So, to all of those great volunteers out there… Happy National Volunteer week. We thank you!
